Productions

Production Slate: The WA Screen Academy production slate concentrates on formats and genres that are common in the television industry. Many of the skills are equally applicable to film.

The major types of projects are:

Short Films

Six films of 6-8 minutes duration are made in conjunction with the WAAPA third year acting class as the talent. WAAPA also provides production crew in design, lighting, sound, wardrobe, production management and art department.

The films are written to a brief provided by the Screen Academy staff who also act as Executive Producers. The brief is much like what one would encounter in television drama - parameters in regard to duration, theme, cast, interior sets and locations are provided.
Script ideas are pitched to the staff and students and promising ideas are taken to second draft before the slate is chosen. Production teams are selected for each film. Intensive script development and project planning are undertaken prior to production. Specialist mentors are brought in to assist the producers, writers, directors, cinematographers, editors, etc.

Lifestyle/Magazine

Four half hour pilots are made. In a process similar to that outlined above, students pitch concepts designed around specific audiences, timeslots and channels. Generally speaking, these usually involve some studio components with a host/presenter and guests and field reports or documentary footage. The objective is to make a pilot and generate a high quality pitch document.

Multi-cam Drama

Two half hour pilots are made, usually one serial drama and one comedy/drama or sitcom. Scripts for these are developed in teams using standard industry procedures. The WAAPA second year actors are the cast. Each Screen Academy director is responsible for an 8-10 minute segment. These projects are made in the studio facilities of TAFEWA Central. Professional mentors are used to advise on studio operations and multi-cam directing.

Documentary, Corporate and Promotional Films

Documentary projects are usually mini-docs of 5-15 minutes duration but longer projects are considered if they can be accomplished within the resources of the Screen Academy. Corporate and promotional projects involve getting a brief from a client, developing a proposal that includes a script/plan, schedule and budget and then producing the project.

Off-slate Productions

Beyond the required projects listed above, students can propose personal projects that they would like to do using Screen Academy equipment and facilities. These require approval by the staff and the students must recruit their own production personnel. Typical off-slate productions have included short films, TVC's and music videos.

In addition, Screen Academy students have the opportunity to shoot many of the live drama, music theatre, opera, dance and music performances at WAAPA.

One of the unique aspects of the WA Screen Academy production program is the proximity to a large pool of gifted students in related areas such as graphics, interactive multimedia, animation, special effects, sound and music composition which are programs within the Faculty of Communications and Creative Industries at ECU. They contribute to the overall quality and 'finish' of Screen Academy projects.
